Mojin: The Lost Legend

With Mojin, visionary director Wuershan delivers his take on the popular Chinese web novel series Ghost Blows Out the Light. While it does suffer a bit from overlength and shallow characterization, Mojin delivers some fun action/fantasy in the vein of similar films such as the Mummy series.

Of course, this being a Mainland production, some political overtones do creep their way through, but thankfully, Wuershan doesn't dwell on these sorts of elements for too long, instead keeping the emphasis on set pieces, which are anchored by some very solid special effects. No one will mistake this for the latest Marvel release in that regard, but it is nice to see a Chinese film that doesn't look like it was produced for the SyFy channel.
