A Game of No Rule

1999

Director: Tony Leung Hung-Wah

Stars: Michael Wong, Kathy Chow, Gabriel Harrison, Chu Wing Tong, Au Kam Tong

Boy, what a mess the movie is. The basic plot has a alcoholic cop named Vodka (Michael Wong) befriending a female hooligan named Six Days (played by Kathy Chow -- you gotta love these names, or maybe you don't). Six Days has just gotten out of prision and wants to make a few scores with her old gang before retiring for good. Trouble is, the "associates" of the loan shark she previously killed and a strange cult are after her.

This is pretty simple stuff, but the script throws in so many lame plot twists that the film becomes almost incomprehensible after a while. Along with sub-par acting (it's never a good sign when Michael Wong delivers the best performance in a movie) and anemic action, A Game of No Rule is bottom of the barrel stuff all the way. Really, the only reason this film doesn't get a lower score is because of Kathy Chow. Sporting a Martix-style look of slicked-back hair and leather outfits, she definitely adds a good bit of eye candy to the proceedings -- it's just too bad that it couldn't have been in a better movie.

RATING: 3.5
