A Rascal's Tale

1991

Director: Tso Kin Nam

Stars: Sylvia Chang, Carrie Ng, Shing Fui-On, Wu Ma, Ken Lo

This is pretty much your standard "young Triad" kind of stuff, with Shing Fui-On and Wu Ma playing fathers of two kids -- one a good student, the other a gangster wannabe -- who must patch their differences to help their offspring. It was nice seeing Shing Fui-On playing a sympathetic character as opposed to his usual nasty villain, but ultimately the film doesn't really go anywhere or show the viewer anything new during its' running time. The picture tries to be more of a serious drama, and this approach works for the most part, but then it undermines this by having your standard "Triads with big choppers" finale, which kills the mood. Overall, A Rascal's Tale isn't a bad movie, but there are a lot of others in the genre which are done better and probably worth a viewing before this.
