Ong Bak Trilogy

After getting the North American rights to Ong Bak from Fox, Magnolia has (through their genre label Magnet) put together all three films in the Ong Bak Trilogy boxset, which is available on DVD and Blu-ray. We are looking at the DVD version, which encompasses five discs in all. Each movie is in its' own plastic snapcase, which can be enclosed in the included cardboard slipcase. Overall, the films look and sound very nice, and there is a solid selection of extras previously unavailable in the format.

Information about the discs as well as clips and screen captures from them are below. The clips and screen captures were taken with 4VideoSoft and VLC Media Player and have not been altered.

The extras are the same as the previous US DVD and Blu-ray released by Fox. Most of them are in full frame and stereo. They include:

  • Live stunt performance (3 min.): Tony Jaa performs in front of an audience in France.
  • Movements of Muay Thai (2 min.): A demonstration of different Muay Thai strikes.
  • Tony Jaa music video (4 min.): A rap video from Reed the Weed and Tragedie featuring Tony Jaa, who thankfully does not rap.
  • Making of music video (7 min.): Behind-the-scenes footage from the video shoot with commentary by director Olivier Megaton.
  • Selected B-roll(6 min.): Several alternate takes for some of the stunts.
  • RZA promo video(1 min.): Wu-Tang Clan's RZA appears in this commercial for the movie.
  • Trailers: Several different US and international versions of the trailer round out the extras.

ONG BAK 2

The extras, most of which are included on a second DVD, are taken from Magnet's previous Blu-ray release of the film and are in full frame and stereo. They include:

  • Alternate cut (89 min.): At first, it was thought this would be the 110 minute cut screened at some film festivals and available on some Asian DVDs of the movie. However, this is the version of the movie shown in some European territories, running about nine minutes shorter than the international cut. It does lose some of the story elements, but it also has some footage not used in the international version, so it is still worth checking out.
  • Making-of featurettes (21 min.): Originally produced for the Thai DVD, these are your standard promo pieces included with many DVDs and Blu-Rays.
  • Behind-the-scenes featurettes (18 min.): These featurettes use un-narrated footage shot on the set. Seeing Tony Jaa at work (and the injuries that occurred on the shoot) make this the best extra on the disc.
  • Cast/crew interviews (25 min.): These are the expanded and un-cut interviews from the making-of featurettes. They're not going to blow you away, but it was good seeing Tony Jaa explain some of his film-making process.
  • HDNet - A Look at Ong Bak 2 (3 min.): A short promo piece used for the HDNET satellite TV network.
  • Ong Bak 3 footage (2 min.): This is the teaser trailer for the next installment in the series.
  • Trailers: US and international versions of the trailer, as well as several other releases from Magnolia/Magnet.

Like Ong Bak 2, most of the extras are included on a second DVD, are presented in full frame and stereo, and were taken from Magnet's previous Blu-ray release of the film. They include:

  • HDNet - A Look at Ong Bak 3 (3 min.): Kickboxer Guy Metzger hosts this featurette about the Ong Bak films originally made for the HDNet channel.
  • The Making of a Legend (15 min.): Tony Jaa and other stars talks about making the movie.
  • Behind the Scenes: Uncovering the Action (6 min.): B-roll footage of setting up and filming the stunts and fight sequences.
  • Interviews (32 min.): Cast and crew discuss the movie.
  • Behind the Scenes Footage (6 min.): More B-roll takes.
  • Trailers: Several different US and international versions of the trailer for the film and other Magnet releases.
